If you follow the instructions laid out above, you should be able to make the partition using a legal copy of OS X 10.7.x.

Sorry, but we can't send illegal copies of software.

Good luck!

Out of curiosity, did any of you disable hibernate? I use an internal SSD for a boot drive, and I had to use Smart Sleep to disable hibernate. Notice that I do not mean "Sleep", but "Hibernate", which writes RAM to disc when the battery power gets low enough. Very buggy operation in OSX that is not SSD-friendly.

I also had to RMA my Wintec 48GB SSD - the replacement has been working just fine for 6 months at least.
In that regard it has been more reliable than the host MacBook Pro :-)
If Wintec go faster or larger or produce a SATA adapter I'd buy into that too!
I posted my setup and experience here: forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=714310&page=3 (bigbadbenny)

I've been thinking about doing exactly this with my 2008 15" MBP, but the reviews I read have been very consistent – this is just not a good long-term speed solution because these little SSD's fail too often. Also, I read that the 24GB and 48GB versions use the motherboard's SATA connection, while the 32GB and 64GB FileMate's use a USB connection, making those two versions much slower and really no different than an external thumb drive. (This is right from Wintec's website, BTW.)

I wish it were different, but I know that were I to do this, I'd be just as disappointed as you all in a short time. Still, I'd love to know what your solutions have been!

Ooops, sorry. I assumed this blog would notify me when there were responses.

I bought mine from NewEgg, but had to go directly to the manufacturer for an RMA: http://wintecind.com

If your drive dies for good, go through them. Most distributors won't be much help.

I submitted an RMA request and they sent me a RAR package which has some tools in it that low-level format the device. Worked like a champ! A couple caveats:

1) It must be done under Windows with the device plugged in via USB. I accomplished this using a virtual machine under Parallels Desktop.

2) The mean it when they say "Make sure the device is the only thing plugged in via USB." My first flash attempt failed, but when the device was on the cable by itself, it worked.

3) This will completely erase any data that was on the device. No surprise here. Thankfully I learned the lesson of having good backups long ago (Thank you ChronoSync!), so this was not a big deal for me.

Now I just have to cross my fingers and hope the device lasts longer than 3 months.

Oh, on my research in buying a more name-brand unit, you won't find anything in this size from any other vendor. I think there were a few 32GB devices from other companies, if you want a full selection, you're stuck with 16GB or smaller.
